| So you hate black metal. Who really gives a flying fuck?
How many here like some black metal?
I tend to like more than I realize. Enslaved, Immortal, Emperor, Gorgoroth, Arcturus, Ancient, old Bathory, Dissection.....
If you like the genre.......your favorite bands?

| I like Immortal, Mayhem, Gorgoth, Dimmu Borgir (or however the hell it is spelled) the first two Bathory albums, and I even like some tunes from the Bon Jovi of the black metal genre Cradle of Filth, and I forgot those silly bastards Vader. | |

That's hilarious. A buddy of mine worships that band. He doesn't think they are overexposed in the least. I like Dusk and Her Embrace by them.

I like Dusk and Her Embrace by them. Great tunes and tell your buddy that when a band like Cradle of Filth gets coverage in mainstream press like Classic Rock and Guitar World that means that they are overexposed.

I will admit that I get a kick out of reading interviews with black metal bands, especially the real "underground" ones that put forth this attitude that they're so "grimm" or "tr00" or whatever... the elitist crap that comes out of these delusional mo-fos never fails to make me giggle.

Why is that? Is it due to the vocals or just the genre in general?

| "Old School Black Metal only"
Venom, Mercyful Fate, Bathory, Possessed
That's about it. The majority of it is just too infantile for my tastes.

Same here. I'm not all that familiar with the genre, but from what little I've heard, I didn't care for. Probably the vocals. The only thing close to it would be the one Venom comp I own. I never heard Mercyful Fate catagorized as "black metal" though. Is that right or is Detuned hitting the pipe again?

| It may be a tomato/tomatoe thing, but Possessed are death metal pioneers not black metal. Mercyful Fate influenced the genre but never were considered black metal as far as I know. | |

| If I had been hitting the pipe I would be in a much better mood than I've been in for quite some time.
The first time I ever heard the term "Black Metal" (aside from the Venom album), was in a review of Mercyful Fate's Melissa back when it first came out (it might have been in Kerrang).
But like every other stupid sub-genre name, it's meaning has changed completely over the years. Black Metal is a different genre now, Doom is a different genre now, Power Metal is most definitely a different genre now, Hardcore is a different genre now....it makes me tired.
That's why I've given up on sub-genres completely. Metal, Rock, Pop, Blues, Jazz, Folk, Classical, Misc. Works for me.

| The vocals are the big difference. Death metal is normally low and gutteral. Black is normally more shrill, and in some cases, more Popeye-like. | |
