The vocals are the big difference. Death metal is normally low and gutteral. Black is normally more shrill, and in some cases, more Popeye-like.
To be fair, by and large, I prefer the originators in both genres to the majority of newer bands, it used to be they were all similar, but distinctive, now theyve become more faceless than Joan Rivers.

The shrill, shreiking vocals (and more recently all the corpse paint) is what I've always associated with black metal. Not my bag.

Even if you're not a black metal kinda guy, the book "Lords of Chaos: The Rise of the Satanic Metal Underground" was a fascinating read. Anybody here read it besides me?

It may be a tomato/tomatoe thing, but Possessed are death metal pioneers not black metal. Mercyful Fate influenced the genre but never were considered black metal as far as I know.
WHAT THE HELL IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BLACK METAL AND DEATH METAL????
They should teach this in school, but nope, we get geometry.
black metal is all about worshiping lord Satan, its also about playing for lord Satan, death metal is about raping mutilated bodies while feasting on their flesh.

Prank call captured on tape... a black guy wanting to join a black metal band. Salty language so this one is NSFW.

Joe doesn't sound very evil. He sounds like his Halo game was interrupted by the phone call.

I read on Blabbermouth a week or so ago that there's a movie version of "Lords of Chaos" in the works to be released in 2010... supposedly a guy who was in "Twilight" is going to play Varg Vikernes. Should be a hoot and a half.
